Château Pierre Bise - Philosopher King of Loire
"Most French regions have a philosopher-king in their midst: a grower who not only tends his vines with great solicitude and vinifies his fruit with skill, but who asks the deep questions which others forget to pose, and who then teases out answers which will, sooner or later, lift the game for all.
Claude Papin performs this role for the central zone of the Loire - and not coincidentally overdelivers in all three of Anjou's wine styles: red wines (from Anjou-Villages), dry whites (a range from different sites in both Savennières and Anjou-Villages) and sweet whites (from Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume). The range is large and complex, and Papin goes to extraordinary lengths to give voice to every nuance of which they are capable. Look out, in particular, for his Sur Spilite red Anjou and Coteaux du Layon-Beaulieu Les Rouannières: the volcanic rock on which both are grown is the 'pierre bise' of the domaine name. But whatever the appellation and price point, this magnificent domaine will leave you with an intimate understanding of Anjou's extraordinary intricacy and richness." (Decanter, 2012)
Lune d' Anjou, nurtured from the plot in Rouannières, is certainly one of the most successful wines of the Château Pierre Bise. A fine collaboration by Cedric Bilien and the magnificent producer Claude Papin, highly anticipated by the market, the new vintage 2014 has just been launched by early April 2016.
Made from 100% Chenin Blanc, Lune d' Anjou is golden yellow in colour. On the nose, it opens with fresh intensity of citrus and exotic flavours. On the palate, this dry white offers a nice balance of exceptionally rich complexity, minerals and long after taste. It pairs well with dishes such as lemon chicken, Thai Spicy dishes and asparagus.
First Grand Cru in Loire Valley with great balance of sweetness and acidity.
Made with only the grapes at their peak of botrytisation, natural fermentation as slowly as possible.
No addition of sugar to keep maximum purity of expression.
As good as Yquem but better value for money!
Fresh stone fruit on the front palate, ripe, honeyed, great acid backbone and long, long finish.
100% Chenin Blanc, made in 100% old oak from 50% Botrytis and 50% Passerillage.
